THE SCIENCES

General Science
General Science

The Science learning area has a range of subject strands which include Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Earth and Space Science. Science learning is theoretical and practical. Students will develop an understanding of the role science plays in the world through observation and investigations. In a changing world where learners are exposed to a huge volume of information through the internet and other sources, it is important that students have the tools to distinguish science from disinformation so that they are able to make informed decisions.

Biology
Biology

The NCEA Biology curriculum in Y12 and Y13 offers a comprehensive exploration of life sciences such as genetics, ecology, and cellular biology.

Y12, students build upon their foundational knowledge and begin to develop a more in depth understanding of biological concepts at cellular level, principles of evolution, biodiversity, and the intricacies of ecosystems.

For Y13’s, the curriculum becomes more specialised in which opportunities become available to do in-depth exploration on advanced topics. This includes understanding the responses of plants and animals to their environment and human evolution. They will also engage in independent research projects, which may align to specific biological questions to further their interests or career aspirations.

Chemistry
Chemistry

NCEA Chemistry plays a vital role in fostering scientific literacy and critical thinking skills. It empowers students to explore the intricacies of the physical world, from the smallest particles to complex chemical reactions that shape our environment and drive innovation.

Y12 students engage in in-depth studies of chemical reactions, equilibrium and organic chemistry allowing a deeper understanding of the fundamental concepts.  Students will develop critical thinking skills, conduct laboratory experiments, and analyse real world phenomena, preparing them for higher level scientific pursuits.

Y13 students explore complex chemical concepts, conduct rigorous experiments, and analyse data to deepen their understanding of chemical principles. This level of study equips students with the skills and knowledge necessary to excel in tertiary education  and pursue  careers in various scientific fields.
